Definition
Atopy is an inhirited predispositions to developed a type 1 hypersensitivity to inhalated or percutaneusly absorbed allergens

Etiology
Feline atopy result forms a genetic tendency to become sensitized by inhalated or percutaneusly absorbed allergens.

Pathophysiology
Although the pathogenesis of atopy is unclear in cats, reaginic antibody present in skin may be involved in mediate reactions to intradermal allergens. Report of familial involvement suggest a genetic component, although an inhirited predispositions has notes been documented.

Clinical presentation
Feline atopy causes a variety of clinical signs. Symmetrical alopecia, miliary dermatitis, eosinophilic plaques, indolent ulcer, purities are most commonly noted. Onset of clinical sign usually occurs between one three years of age and rarely before one years. No breed or sex predilections have been noted.

Differential diagnosis
Flea bites hypersensitivity, food hypersensitivity, notoedres cati, pediculosis, Cheyletiellosis, biotin deficiency, essensitial fatty acid deficiency, intestinal parasite hypersensitivity, bacterial pyoderma, dermatophytosis, malassezia dermatitis, and demodecosis.

Diagnosis
As in dog, a careful clinical history, physical examination and ruling out infections and other allergic causes of purities assist in the diagnosis of atopy in the cats. Specific allergy testing can identify allergens for hyposensitization

Management
Essensitial fatty acid supplementation, anti histamines, intermittent glucocorticoids, hyposensitization and controlling secondary coetaneous infections and complicating factors (example: fleas) afford an animal every opportunity to improve
